Why I Love Kimonos (And Why You Might Too)
I'll be honest. A few years ago, I thought kimonos were only for tall, glamorous women who looked effortlessly stylish while sipping cocktails on a tropical holiday.
Then I tried one.
As a size 16 woman with a tummy and bum that don't always cooperate, I quickly discovered something wonderful: kimonos are one of the easiest pieces to wear.
No zips. No buttons. No squeezing into anything. No standing in front of the mirror wondering if your top is clinging in all the wrong places.
Just throw one on and go.
They Make Everyday Outfits Feel More Interesting
Most days you'll find me in jeans, a simple tank or tee, and comfortable shoes. Hardly groundbreaking fashion.
But add a kimono and suddenly the outfit feels intentional.
It's a bit like putting on lipstick when your hair is having a rebellious day. Minimal effort, maximum impact.
I usually wear mine over a neutral-coloured tank and jeans. It's my go-to outfit when I want to look like I've made an effort without actually making much effort.
They're Great for Those Days
You know the days I'm talking about.
The days when your jeans fit a little tighter than you'd like.
The days when you're heading out for lunch and don't feel like tucking anything in.
The days when you'd prefer not to have your bum or tummy taking centre stage.
A kimono won't solve all of life's problems, but it can make you feel a little more comfortable in your own skin.
Lisa's Note
As someone with a tummy and bum, I love the extra coverage kimonos provide without feeling bulky or frumpy. They skim over all the bits I'd rather not highlight and somehow make me feel a little more put together.
They're Surprisingly Versatile
One of the things I love most is how many ways you can wear them.
Over jeans.
With a simple black dress.
Over a swimsuit on holiday.
With shorts and a tank in summer.
Or layered over long sleeves and denim when the weather cools down.
They're one of the hardest-working pieces in my wardrobe.
They're Not Just for Special Occasions
I think this is where many women get stuck.
We buy beautiful clothes and save them for "someday".
But life is happening now.
Wear the kimono to lunch.
Wear it to the markets.
Wear it while catching up with friends.
Wear it because it's Tuesday.
I used to save my favourite clothes for special occasions. These days, if something makes me feel good, I wear it. Life's too short to leave beautiful things hanging in the wardrobe waiting for the perfect moment.
The Bottom Line
If you're new to kimonos, don't overthink it.
Start with a style you love.
Throw it over your favourite jeans and tank.
Look in the mirror.
And if you feel just a little more confident, a little more comfortable, and a little more like yourself, then you've probably found the right one.
That's certainly how it worked for me.
xx Lisa
